The NBA was rocked by one of its biggest trades in recent memory as Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo was confirmed to be moving from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, ending a partnership of more than a decade that delivered a championship in 2021.
The trade details
Per ESPN and NBA.com, Antetokounmpo and teammate Bobby Portis head to Miami, while Milwaukee receives guard Tyler Herro (a Wisconsin native), along with Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakučionis, plus the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, a 2030 first-round swap, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, and a 2033 second-round pick. How we got here
ESPN reports describe growing tension between the Greek star and Bucks management over the team's ability to build a title-contending roster around him. Despite reportedly fielding multiple strong offers, Antetokounmpo chose Miami, where he is expected to lead a new era following Jimmy Butler's departure.
Ripple effects across the league
The deal capped a frenetic offseason that also saw LaMelo Ball move from the Charlotte Hornets to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Isaiah Stewart traded from Detroit to Memphis — on the back of a 2026 Draft in which the Washington Wizards selected AJ Dybantsa first overall.
What's next
As the league's free agency negotiating period opens, attention turns to how Miami builds around its new superstar, while Milwaukee begins a rebuild around the young assets and picks acquired in the trade.
