The world begins the greatest football event in history today, Thursday 11 June 2026, as World Cup 2026 kicks off — the first edition co-hosted by three nations: the United States, Canada and Mexico. The opening match pits Mexico against South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca, which becomes the first stadium in the world to host matches at three different World Cups.
The biggest World Cup ever
For the first time, the tournament expands to 48 teams and 104 matches over roughly 39 days, spread across 16 cities and 16 stadiums. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four; the top two of each group plus the eight best third-placed sides advance to a brand-new Round of 32, before the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

The final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July 2026, capping nearly six weeks of non-stop football.
A historic Arab presence
Eight Arab teams feature in this edition — Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and Jordan — the largest Arab representation in World Cup history, reflecting the region's rapid football growth.
