It was an Arab night in every sense at the Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara: two Arab nations head to head, a crowd split by green flags, and drama that never let up. In the end, Algeria beat Jordan 2-1 in Group J — but the result alone doesn't tell the whole story. (ESPN)
How Jordan led
Who said the Chivalrous were just making up the numbers? Nizar Al-Rashdan stunned everyone with a superb first-half strike to give Jordan a deserved lead despite Algeria's possession. They were organised, brave, and so close to a historic night.
When it turned
Algeria came back transformed and found their key in set-pieces. On 68', Nadhir Benbouali headed in a Riyad Mahrez corner to level, and on 82' substitute Amine Gouiri completed the comeback — again from a Mahrez corner. Both Algeria goals came from the corners, where Jordan were at their most vulnerable.
What it means
The defeat ended Jordan's hopes of reaching the round of 32 on their historic World Cup debut — but a side playing its first finals and performing like this earns respect, not pity. Algeria, meanwhile, kept their qualification hopes alive and showed that experience — and Mahrez in particular — decides the big moments.
